The Desert Trip from Agadir Is Not the Sahara — and That Is Fine

There is a photograph that sells most of these trips: dunes, low sun, camels in silhouette. Look at the horizon in it. In the Agadir version, the horizon is the sea.

That is the single most useful thing to understand before you book a desert trip from here. Morocco’s Sahara — Merzouga, Erg Chebbi, the camp under the stars — is on the other side of the Atlas mountains, and getting there from Agadir is a three-day journey, not an afternoon. What the half-day trips go to are the coastal dunes north of the city, chiefly at Timlalin.

They are genuine dunes. They are just an hour away rather than two days, and they end at the Atlantic.

What the half-day actually is

The most-reviewed trip without quad bikes runs five hours at €10.20 and is a fair template for the category. Return hotel pickup from Agadir or Taghazout, a guided sandboarding session at the Timlalin dunes, a stop at a canyon, and a walk through the painted Colors Village at Agkroud. Guides and equipment are included; meals are not.

Sandboarding, honestly

It is sledging on sand. You get a board, you walk up, you come down, and unless you already snowboard you will do most of it sitting down. The dunes at Timlalin are big enough for a decent run and not so steep that a beginner is in trouble.

Two things nobody puts in the listing:

• Sand gets into everything. Camera, phone, ears, the bag you brought. A sealed bag for anything with a lens or a charging port is not fussiness.
• Walking up is the workout. Each run costs you a climb through soft sand. Children do four or five and then want to dig instead, which is a perfectly good outcome for a morning.

The other thing the listings understate is how much of the five hours is driving. This trip’s own schedule gives 70 minutes out, two and a half hours at the dunes and an hour back — a good two hours in the van. That is not a swindle, but if you were picturing five hours in the sand, adjust.

Which version to take

The category splits into four, and the difference is what is bolted onto the dunes:

• Sandboarding plus canyon. The cheapest, and the most balanced. The canyon stop is what stops it being a single-activity trip.
• Sandboarding plus a sunset camel ride. The one that produces the photograph. Afternoon departure; the light does the work.
• Sandboarding plus quad biking. The most-reviewed combination in Agadir, and the one to take if the dunes are the point rather than the desert.

When to go, and what to wear

Morning or late afternoon. The middle of the day in the dunes in summer is unpleasant and, on the walk back up, genuinely hard work. The operators know this: most departures are early or aimed at the sunset.

Closed shoes, not sandals — sand at midday is hotter than it looks and the boards have edges. Something over your arms; the reflected light off pale sand burns people who were fine on the beach the day before. Sunglasses matter more here than sunscreen does, because there is nothing to shade your eyes and the glare comes from below as well as above.

In winter it is entirely doable, and often better: the sand is cool, the light is long all day, and the Atlantic wind that makes the coast chilly is mostly blocked behind the first ridge.

If you actually want the Sahara

It exists, it is reachable from Agadir, and it takes days rather than hours. The multi-day trips run east through the mountains to the dunes at Merzouga, with a night in a desert camp, and typically end in Marrakesh rather than back in Agadir. That last detail catches people out — check the drop-off before you book, because a one-way trip means arranging your own way home.
